We manage the full Intellectual Property Protection (IPP) process: screening, filing, and registration at national and international levels, giving researchers exclusive rights to their creations.

Patent
Exclusive rights for new inventions
Exclusive rights for new inventions (product or process) that meet requirements of novelty, inventiveness, and industrial application. Protection lasts 20 years from filing date.
Copyright
Protects original creative works
Exclusive rights for creators over their original works, automatically granted without registration. Works include literature, music, art, films, recordings, broadcasts, etc.
- Literary, musical, artistic works: life of creator + 50 years.
- Films, sound recordings, performances: 50 years from publication or completion.
- Broadcasts: 50 years from first transmission.
Trademark
Unique mark for products/services
Symbols (words, logos, names, numbers, etc.) linking goods/services with their owner. Each registration is valid for 10 years and renewable.
Product look
Protection of product design
External features of a product (shape, pattern, decoration) visible to the eye. Must be new and undisclosed. Protection lasts 5 years and can be extended up to 15 years.
Commercialisation at UNIMAS
At UNIMAS, ideas are transformed into impact through Intellectual Property (IP) protection and technology transfer. The University offers pathways to commercialise research outputs while safeguarding the rights of innovators. A minimum value of RM20,000 applies to commercialisation activities.
Licensing (min. RM10,000)
- Exclusive License: Full rights granted to the license holder, with UNIMAS retaining non-commercial usage.
- Non-Exclusive License: Rights shared with multiple parties, with options for sub-licensing.
Surrendering of Rights
- Full transfer of IP rights through direct sale.
- Partial transfer possible (e.g., by region or application).
Technology Transfer
- Transfer of technology to another party with fair compensation, monetary or otherwise.

The advancement in globalization in the past two decades has prompted the need for internationalization of higher education. Institutions of higher learning have realigned their approaches to include initiatives to develop their graduates’ global mindedness that would underpin their personal and professional lives. One of the strategies employed to meet this goal is through student mobility programmes which require experiences with host universities. However, the travel restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic have affected the implementation of such programmes. The new beyond normal e-EduTour utilized a hybrid approach and was successfully orchestrated virtually in 2021 and 2022. The uniqueness of the e-EduTour unfolded the opportunity for the creation of intellectual property (IP) followed by the commercialisation of the programme.

Nypa fruticans (Apong) is one of the mangrove plants in Malaysia. Extract of Nypa fruticans showed high total phenolics, total flavonoid content, and high antioxidant properties. Chlorogenic acid, protocatechuic acid, and kaempferol were identified as major compounds in the extract. N. fruticans could be used as natural antioxidant. The nutritional composition and other therapeutic uses of N. fruticans revealed that N. fruticans contained macro-nutrients, especially fibres. Due to the high nutritional quality of N. fruticans, it could be served as raw ingredients for various skincare products, the skin food formulations. Thus, it is a potent antiaging substance in cosmetics. Virgin coconut oil (VCO) is one of the complement component in this formulation. Since VCO is compatible ingredient to be mixed together, it will contribute the moisturizing element that needed in cosmetics and skincare products. VCO contains lauric acid which was used as remedy for treating illness, wounds and infections. Lauric acid also acts as a strong antioxidant agent which are good for skin rejuvenating and antiaging effect. Therefore, our products formulations are ready to be marketed. Our products consist of Apong Cleanser, Apong Day & Night Cream, Apong Facial Serum and Apong Facial Moisturizer Mist.

The biogenic supplemented fish feed is a mixture of live beneficial bacteria (Lactobacillus acidophilus) and fungi (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), which do the manipulation of intestinal microbial communities, suppression of pathogens, immunomodulation, stimulation of epithelial cell proliferation, differentiation, fortification of the intestinal barrier as well as meeting dietary requirements. The specific combination of positive effects at the molecular level may differ with the nature of each supplement. This formulated feed is inexpensive and there is no similar feed is available in the present market. Thus, the product will contribute to the expansion of fish aquaculture in Malaysia leading to create new job and ensuring the sustainable food security.
